Nutcracker Music
Russian Dance

Nutcracker music "Russian Dance" will perk up the ears of any young dancer who has participated in the Nutcracker ballet.

This sheet music is short, but it is a satisfying arrangement!

Is this Nutcracker music easy?

Well... not particularly.  It moves VERY FAST, and involves a few jumps in the right hand.

However, just look at the left hand.  Aside from one short migration away from a G chord/scale position, the notes are all nicely settled in that 5-note scale area.

And after the acrobatics of the first three measures, the right hand also settles into a "G position" and stays there.

A video from 2009

Though the video quality is sub-par, the dancing is superb, and the music is FAST with excellent energy.  This was my favorite of the videos I found!

This piece has a simple construction

At least, this page, which is only part of the larger composition, has a nice, predictable layout.  A B A B.  Look at the second half:

Different fingering is possible

Though the fingering I have placed is sensible, I found I couldn't get the speed I wanted when using finger 5 at the top of the little runs that begin measures one and nine.  Instead, I ended up using 1-2-3-4! to put energy into the first measure.  Your students will have to experiment.

What's different between the top & bottom of the page?

Only the final measure is different.

I did not put repeat dots at the bottom of the page, but I should have.  When you listen to a video recording of The Nutcracker, you will see that the music of this page (A B A B) is repeated!  Altogether, the form is A B A B    A B A B.
