In Wales, this song is known as 'Ar Hyd y Nos.' Sometimes treated as a Christmas song, it was written by Welshman John Ceiriog Hughes in the 1800's, and translated into English by Harold Edwin Boulton (according to the information I found at classical-music.com.
Almost unknown are some of the lyrics of the extra verses, which evoke very pretty word-pictures.
"Deep the silence round us spreading... Dark the path that we are treading..."
"Though our hearts be wrapped in sorrow, from the home of dawn, we borrow promise of a glad tomorrow..."
A quiet song, as a lullaby should be, this song doesn't move too fast.
Fingering remains mostly stationary, with just one lift of the right hand, then a downward turn, facilitated by a crossover in line three.
And nicely, the left hand doesn't have to go anywhere!

This beginner sheet makes a very beautiful duet if the secondo player uses flowing broken chords. No, I have not written a secondo; instead, use the chord symbols to make up your own arrangement.
If you are new to using chords, visit my Lead Sheets page, and also Mary Had a Little Lamb, where I have many suggestions for using piano chords (you may have to scroll a bit to read those sections).

This is a nice key for singing in, though it may be a bit low for many of your younger students, who tend to sing more easily above Middle C.
Notice that the tabs are all either open, fret 2, or fret 4? That happens sometimes, and makes a tablature melody easier to learn.

This is the perfect easy start for little pianists.
And when they start reading white-key notes on the staff, this is a fun easy resource to say each week, "Choose a new black-key song at home this week and figure it out to show me next lesson!" They will be spending more time at the piano.
A perfect read aloud storybook
for little boys or girls.
The Adventures of Tonsta highlight the travels of a very young boy with a good heart, who goes about helping folk in trouble.
With a red cap on his head and a sack of tools slung over his shoulder, Tonsta seems to meet people in distress wherever he goes.
Lots of trolls in this book - including one who gives him a Christmas gift!
Hi, I'm Dana! (Say that like "Anna".) I'm the owner of Music-for-Music-Teachers.com, and a newer site, SingTheBibleStory.com.
Like some of you, I've been playing the piano since early childhood, and have added a few other instruments along the way, plus an interest in arranging and composing music.
You can find out more about me and the reason for this website at my About Me page.
